SMAK-Stiks allow students to safely increase the force and speed directed at their training partner. Students will get used to striking hard and also receiving impact. They will be less inhibited and more daring and willing to try more things, prior to attempting to perform the same techniques with real rattan.
Work with the rattan first since it will provide the best feel for a given technique or concept. However, as you increase intensity, and the likelihood of inadvertent contact becomes increased, switch to the SMAK-Stiks. This way, students are less likely to develop a flinching response if mistakes are made. Then go back to the rattan and perform the same techniques at a higher intensity.
Sparring allows a student to test and refine concepts and techniques, and to learn how an opponent’s body as well as his own, will react to a given stimuli. There should always be a purpose for sparring, otherwise, it’s just fighting.
The Q-Series is lighter and more maneuverable than the X-Series. It’s designed for those who would treat the stick as if it were a sword. In this application, the combatants are typically further apart and thus tend to generate more power during the strike.
The X-Series was designed more for the stick fighter. It is the stick fighter that will close the range during combat and utilize the stick for grappling, locks, chokes, etc... For this reason, the X-Series is heavier and more durable.
SMAK-Stiks were designed mainly for FMA practitioners. There are dozens of FMA styles, all with varying techniques and approaches to training and combat. Consequently, SMAK-Stiks are available in varying lengths, weights, and stiffness. Additionally, we have designed custom SMAK-Stiks for those who were looking for a specific feel and functionality. So which SMAK-Stik should you choose? It depends.
The easies way to choose, is to let the application decide. Meaning, how you intend to apply or use the SMAK-Stik will determine which model to purchase. Both are equal in quality and effectiveness.
SMAK-Stiks if used correctly, will allow students to train at 100% speed and intensity, without serious risk of injury or pain. Protective eyewear and light head gear should always be used when sparring. Remember, there are certain points within the human anatomy that will always be susceptible to injury.
SMAK-Stiks were designed to provide the most realistic feel to weapons training without jeopardizing safety. This was by far the most difficult hurdle during the design phase. The designers took into account the attributes of real weapons and isolated specific strikes and parries of the various FMA disciplines. Additionally, they sent prototypes of the product to numerous FMA instructors who tested them extensively. The result was a perfect blend of realism and safety.
From the moment you pick up your SMAK-Stiks, you'll notice the solid feel of the handle and the perfect weight. Take a few swings in the air, like swinging a rattan stick, you won't see much flex or feel much drag. Consequently, the strikes are quick and accurate. Your timing will not be thrown off when transitioning between SMAK-Stiks and real sticks.
It stings! No broken bones, but it will leave a mark. Remember part of the realism is the feeling of getting hit. Students should always remember that the object is to not get hit, so cover-up.
As martial artists, the designers of the SMAK-Stiks knew all too well the force and impact their product would have to withstand, but more importantly, they knew how their product would be used. The durability testing took into account all these aspects. In short, the testing was done in context. This ensured that the materials used to create SMAK-Stiks were best suited for the application.
Anyone who is seeking to elevate his or her weapons training regiment. SMAK-Stiks allow both beginning students and experienced martial artists to safely train at 100% speed and intensity without sacrificing realism. Many law enforcement agencies and private security companies have made SMAK-Stiks part of their training regiment.
